Map of Beat 1

Situated immediately downstream of Srahlea Bridge it is another very long beat that fishes two rods all from the right bank. It has three named short pools namely the Bridge Pool, Wall Pool and the Rock Pool which fish best in falling water. The Long Pool as the name suggests is a longer stretch of water - all pools hold fish in the right water conditions. The Stepping Stones is a series of large flat stones across a shallow stretch of river and there is nice fly water immediately downstream.

The area above the Black River is known as the Round Pool which is deep holding water and holds fish right throughout the season. The Derrycraff River known locally as the Black River enters the main river and the Black River Run holds fish especially on a falling spate close to the alder trees on the opposite bank. The Birch Pool and the Meadow Flats are fairly flat areas of water but worth fishing especially immediately upstream of the Cattle Pass.

The Cattle Pass was another favourite area of Mrs. March especially for a Spring salmon. The Drain is a long somewhat narrow stretch of water with lily pads growing in the water along the banks in mid summer - it is an excellent holding area for grilse and they can be taken there fishing small flies in an upstream breeze. Paddy Bawn's is another deep water holding area and Spring salmon as well as grilse have been taken there in recent years.
